2007 Cortland Arts and Wine Festival Takes Shape
The Cultural Council of Cortland County is busy fine tuning its plans for the 2007 Cortland Arts and Wine Festival, scheduled for Saturday, August 4, from 10 am to 5 pm in the Courthouse Park in Downtown Cortland. We’ve had a fantastic response from the area’s wineries,” exclaims David Blatchley, project chairperson. “The inclusion of an outstanding sampling of wineries from this region underscores our promotion of Cortland as the Eastern Gateway to the Finger Lakes. By combining the enjoyment of more traditional visual and musical arts with the art of wine tasting, we hope to provide a unique and elegant experience.” The Festival is free and open to the public. There will be a $10 fee for a ticket to enter the large wine tent which will be cordoned off. Other events, including access to the artists’ exhibits and classically oriented music being performed throughout the day will be free. Food vendors will also be scattered through the park grounds, and children’s activities will be included.
According to Executive Director David Beale, “We have more artists signing up on a daily basis. In addition to having a broad representation of local artists, we have also received applicants for the juried exhibit from New York City, Syracuse, Ithaca and Binghamton areas, plus several from Pennsylvania. We expect more from outside the immediate area as the deadline approaches.” Artists accepted into the show include painters in various media, art photographers, and fine art crafters. The deadline for applying is June 1. Visit www.Cortlandartsandwine.com for the application form.
Local musicians will be performing classically oriented and non-traditional music throughout the day in a tent set up in the rotunda area in front of the courthouse. Music will include among others a brass group, singers, pianists, and music from all eras including contemporary works by local composers. The music will be audible throughout the festival grounds, and seating for those wishing to relax and enjoy the music uninterrupted will be available. There will also be a grassy area near the music tent for those wishing to picnic or stretch out on the lawn.
