Cultural Council of Cortland County Plans a Banner Year

The mission of the Cultural Council of Cortland County is to encourage, promote,
and sustain the arts and culture in Cortland County.  A major avenue for fostering
the arts in our community is through collaborating with our fellow nonprofit cultural
agencies.   In 2010, we plan joint events with the Cortland Repertory Theatre, the
1890 House Museum and the Homer Center for the Arts.  We also have
partnership programs with local businesses including an ongoing art exhibit at
Hope Lake Lodge

A Plein Air Paint-Out will be held in July in partnership with the Cortland Repertory
Theatre. 2010 will be the 2nd year we have jointly sponsored this fundraising
event in which visual artists simultaneously paint outdoor scenes at  Little York
Lake, inviting the public to watch the creations being made, ask questions of the
artists, and purchase the resulting art work during a silent auction following the
Paint-Out.  The Paint-Out is held as part of the Cortland Repertory Theatre’s
annual auction at the Little York Pavilion.

Look for the 4th Annual Arts Auction to again be held in late Fall at the 1890
House Museum.  It provides an opportunity to support local visual artists and to
view the 1890 House decked in all its Victorian Age holiday glory.  It's a great time
to purchase unique gifts for those hard-to-shop-for people on your holiday list
while at the same time supporting the local cultural economy.

We are delighted to be partnering with the Homer Center for the Arts to promote
and showcase a “Community Arts Challenge.”  This broad-based community event
is now in the planning stages.  Local visual and performing artists, both
professional and amateur, will be invited to submit works that correspond to a
theme that is chosen for the Community Arts Challenge (CAC).  Submissions will
be exhibited at the Center for the Arts and the Cultural Council and possibly other
venues. Submissions will be juried and prizes will be awarded at an opening night
ceremony. The public will be invited to view the exhibits of the visual arts
submissions and to attend CAC performances.  Watch for more information as
plans evolve for this exciting project!

The Cortland Arts Trail is being redesigned and morphed  into  the Seven Valley
Arts Trail .  The new trail will sponsor approximately 12 carefully selected
businesses for the display of artwork by a dozen artists selected by a jurying
process.   A color brochure will be made available at all locations, with monthly
press releases featuring one of the businesses and artists on the trail.  All artwork
will be for sale.

Our new workshop room at 9 North Main St in Cortland is available for evening
classes and workshops throughout the week.  The winter schedule provides
instruction in watercolor, taught by local artist David Beale, and a life drawing
class.  We have received requests for instruction in drawing and oil painting.
Artists interested in teaching a course are encouraged to contact the Cultural
Council.  We are also in the process of arranging exhibits of local art work in our
Gallery space.  Please contact the Cultural Council if you would like to utilize the
space or volunteer a few hours monthly to keep it open on Thursday and Friday
evenings.

The Fourth Annual Cortland Arts and Wine Festival will be held Saturday, August
7, in the Courthouse Park.  This festival is rapidly becoming a premiere event for
showcasing the region’s wineries, musicians, artists, and food vendors.  A new
winery addition this year is the Pazdar Winery located in Scotchtown, NY.  The
Pazdars will feature chocolate wine. They were the first to make a chocolate wine
and use only the finest ingredients including roasted cocoa beans that they grind
to their own specification.  They will present three chocolate wine products: Eden's
Pleasure™ - a sensuous blend of premium white wine with hints of bananas and
chocolate, Cerise Chocolat - luscious cherries with a hint of rich dark chocolate,
and Chocolata Amor™ - a rich, dark, dry, chocolaty wine with hints of other exotic
spices. Approximately 24 New York wineries, 75 artists from throughout the upstate
region and Northern Pennsylvania, several  local music ensembles, and twelve
local and regional food vendors will be featured.

The Cultural Council publishes a biweekly e-newsletter, Arts and Living, which is
received by over 4,000 email recipients.  The e-newsletter features upcoming
events and opportunities for local
