Culture: Does "culture" bring to mind The Beatles,
Michelangelo? Jackson Pollack? Grandma Moses?
Jiffy much more!
The Cultural Council of Cortland County (C4) blends
music and drama - the performing arts; paintings,
photography and sculpture - the visual arts; and many
other arts including music composition, creative
writing, culinary arts and a wealth of artisan crafts.
If you believe that culture has a lasting significance in
our lives, which is meant to be shared by everyone,
you should be a member of C4.
Many of you may be joining using our mailed form. If
so, many thanks! You may also join by sending us
our Online Membership Form.
As an added bonus for your membership, you also will
be able to tour another cultural artifact in our
community: the 1890 House Museum. Go as often as
you like!
We look forward to having you join C4! Thank you so
much for enriching the cultural life for all of us by
providing your support.
Sincerely,
David Beale, Executive Director
Barbara Pauldine, Board President

Will You Support a Local Nonprofit Gallery?
The stars may be aligning for organizing a non-profit arts gallery on Main St. in Cortland, but support from both artists and the public will be critical in determining its feasibility.

November Plein Air Exhibit at Cortland Free Library
The Tioughnioga River Painters and the Cultural Council of Cortland County are co-sponsoring a Plein Air Exhibit at the Cortland Free Library through the month of November. "Plein Air" is a phrase meaning the artist paints the scene outdoors on site. Such paintings usually depict local scenes and are fresh and uncomplicated.
Check out the exhibit on display until the end of the month!

Cayuga Chamber Orchestra Eyes Cortland Concerts
An intensive fundraising effort is now underway by the Cultural Council of Cortland County to bring
members of Ithaca's Cayuga Chamber Orchestra to Cortland for a series of four concerts, beginning in
October, 2011 and ending in March, 2012.
The loss of the presence of the Syracuse Symphony in Cortland has inspired Sheila Ossit, Executive
Director of the Orchestra, to seek the aid of members of the Council to fill the cultural void left here by
that unforeseen departure. Said Ms. Ossit recently: "Everything 'good' can come from this: the potential
to broaden our audience, the ability to bring people into downtown Cortland, and of course, the
experience of a live classical music performance on a Saturday evening! We are hopeful, and looking
forward to it all!"
The ultimate goal is to bring the entire orchestra to Cortland for four concerts each season, complete
with professional vocal and instrumental soloists, beginning in the fall, 2012. The performance venue will
be the former United Community Church at 19 Church St. This acoustically vibrant 500-seat auditorium,
now owned by Mr. Dan McNeil of McNeil Development Company, was the site of the acclaimed
performance of Bach's "St. Matthew Passion" on Good Friday, 2010.
For the upcoming season, the orchestra will send its finest players for a series of chamber concerts.
Composers to be heard will include Beethoven, Brahms, Rossini, Strauss, Faure, and Scarlatti. The
performance dates will be October 15, November 12, February 18, and March 31, all Saturday evenings.
The cost to bring these fine musicians to Cortland is between $12,000 and $15,000. Four members of
the Cultural Council of Cortland County--Barbara Pauldine, David Beale, Mary Coffey, and Donna
Yacavonne--and Stephen Wilson of the Performing Arts Department of SUNY Cortland have begun the
task of seeking funding and are asking lovers of classical music in the area to lend their support. Said
Barbara Pauldine, president of the Board of Directors of the Cultural Council: "This is an opportune
moment to bring great orchestral music back to Cortland County, but we need help."
Those who give a generous donation for this project will be included in the "Circle of Friends of
CCO/Cortland" and will be identified in the programs of the performances. Checks should be made
payable to the Cultural Council of Cortland County and sent to 64 Main St., Suite 207, Cortland, with
"CCO" indicated in the memo line.
The degree of success in this effort will determine the number of concerts that can be funded. All money
received will go directly to the musicians at each event.
